Best skincare products for those new to skincare!
I hear this so often. It’s a glut of skincare products out there! They are all saying the same things pretty much… we’re the best! How can you tell what is good, what makes sense, and what will make a difference? Here’s a way to approach it:
Start small but realistically
- Accept that real improvements in your skin will take place over 3-24 months depending on your age and how much sun damage you have. It’s well worth it!!
- Accept that you will start to really see results in the first month or two but changes will be slower than we want!
- Remember that the changes that YOU can see, are reflecting changes going on underneath in the deeper layers of the skin.
- The deeper layer of the skin (dermis) take longer to repair themselves. The epidermis (outer layer) takes about 30 days.
- Focus on your face, neck, and chest to start
Steps 1 and 2 – so simple but these skincare products gotta be right for you
- Find a sunscreen with 9-18% zinc oxide in it that you LOVE. This is the key. You want to start putting this on your face, neck and chest every morning. I use an untinted one on my neck and chest, and a tinted one on my face, but if this is too fussy for you, just buy the untinted one and use all 3 places. If you have acne, try the Elta Clear.
- A high quality antioxidant is your next step. For now, just use it at night. See our shop for ideas. You can let it soak in for 5 min and then use a little moisturizer over it at night if you want.
That’s it for now! Let your skin adjust to these two things for a month. If you get irritated or break out, stop the product. You may need to try 2-3 different ones to find the right one. When you have this down, go to step 3.
Step 3
- Now take the antioxidant you’ve been using at night, and start using it under your sunscreen in the morning.
- Add one more product and use it at night now. Try the SkinMedica retinol 0.25% or the TNS Essential (the one pump not the two pump)
- Add an eye cream.
That’s it to get you off to a good start. Your skin should look much better by the third month.
Hope this helps, Dr. I
