Part 2/2 Platelet Rich Plasma 2.0 or PRPFM

We all love the idea of Platelet Rich Plasma. And why not? Using our own activated platelets and serum to promote collagen growth and skin regeneration. It’s natural, almost risk free and low discomfort. I agree with that, except there are a lot of things we still don’t know. And below are just some of the questions.

What we still don’t know:

  • What exactly is causing the positive changes. This sounds odd, but there are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of bioactive molecules in our serum and platelets. Which are key?
  • Once most are identified, which are the most important, and can they be concentrated in some way?
  • Do certain drugs, herbs, vitamins, foods, etc. change the composition of our serum in a way that might affect the results?
  • What are the best techniques for injection and application?

You get the idea… and these are just a few of the questions.

Areas being currently treated by injection or topical (both FDA on and off-label)

  1. The scalp. For promoting hair growth in men and women with genetic hair loss. Works best with mild to moderate hair loss. One tube of blood produces about 3-4 cc of serum with activated platelets. Consequently, this enough to inject the part line, and the top of the head or the frontal recession. Two tubes can be done at the same time. The most common protocol is 3 treatments about 1 month apart with a “booster” at 6 months, and then again at one year. See your dermatologist to evaluate which type of hair loss you have.
  2. The eye area. FDA off-label and experts only please! Cannulas and needles of various sizes may be used. Cannulas are safer, but still dangerous if used inside the eye socket, for obvious reasons. This area is very dangerous for inexperienced doctors or nurses.
  3. Use with laser. After CO2 laser treatments, there is an approximately 30 minute period where the tiny, micron sized channels are open, and can be a conduit for PRPFM. Therefore, it penetrates enough to speed healing and support regeneration. The same may be true after Fraxel, but not as deep.

As with anything technical, details and precision are key. If you’re not getting results, it may be in the process. Or… it may be something about you individually. It’s tough to tell.

Other areas are being treated as well, but these are the main ones.

Hope this helps,
